While I'm not a fan of their threatening style, I have to admit that it works. It is effective on kids who have some type of family to return to. I still question whether it works on kids who've grown up in the foster care system or on kids who've already spent years in tough sectors of juvenile detention, but I think it would have worked on me. I would have been scared straight.
I saw Beyond Scared Straight on the A&E Channel for the first time. I remember seeing the original Scared Straight video over ten years ago. Before watching this version, I questioned whether that style would still work with today's youth. In the beginning of the show I saw that it did work quickly on most of the kids, and it looked like some of the tougher kids were trying to hold out. That's what I expected, but after a while even those kids started to give in.
